Networking events can feel a little awkward, especially for young professionals just starting out and trying to make connections. In July, my friends Sondra Clark and Scooter Schaefer came up with a fun alternative when they invited me to share my career experiences with the Veritas Fellows at the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI) during a speed networking event.
The format was pretty straightforward. A group of professionals from different backgrounds stood at high-top tables while the fellows rotated between us, asking questions about our careers, experiences, and advice for navigating the professional world. Sondra and Scooter deserve credit for putting together a fun, relaxed environment that encouraged some great conversations.

I enjoyed hearing what was on their minds. We talked about networking, making career decisions, and some of the challenges that come with figuring out where you want to go professionally.
One question that came up was why I’ve stayed at Americans for Tax Reform for so long. It’s a fair question, especially in Washington, where changing jobs every few years is pretty common. For me, the answer has a lot to do with believing in the work, having opportunities to take on new challenges, and continuing to learn.
I’ve always enjoyed opportunities to share my professional experiences with young conservatives who are starting their careers in Washington. It’s rewarding to offer some perspective on the decisions and challenges they’ll encounter, and I appreciate the chance to get to know the next generation of professionals entering the movement.
I appreciated the chance to share some of my experiences and enjoyed meeting the fellows. Thanks to Sondra and Scooter for including me and for the work they’re doing to help develop the next generation of communications professionals.
